Hi everyone! Welcome to Witchcraft & Metaphysics! If you’re new here, please check out this About Page to find out more. Every month I release a themed, downloadable pack filled with activities, prompts and more, all to help us enhance our relationships with Magic. The theme for this this month’s pack is Resources of Magic. The download is at the end of the post. Enjoy! My work depends entirely on subscribers, so please sign up! And my heartfelt gratitude goes out to those already subscribed. Let’s keep building this amazing community of magic together!
I have to confess, at first I wasn’t all that excited about this month’s exploration of Resources of Magic. Maybe it’s just me, but I prefer sinking my teeth into great philosophical mysteries and poking around the deepest corners of the unknown. Resources of Magic felt a little “meat-and potatoes-y” to me. More filler than flair.
So, who chose this topic anyway?
Okay fine, it was me. I’m the one who chose this.
I did it because I believe it’s essential that we not only use our resources, but come into conscious relationship with them. There are already in existence hundreds of books that list magical resources (like herbs, crystals, oils, tools, spells, sacred texts, etc.) and discuss how to use them. Those are great, but what I’m more interested in is relating well with those resources. What I mean by that is I want to focus on really becoming allies with them. I want us to build intimate partnerships and friendships with our resources as we connect to Magic with them.
Resources. What are they?
I’m sure there’s a dictionary definition having to do with accessible supplies. The etymology of the word is about “rising up again”, but for me, ‘resource’ is all about the word ‘Source’. REsources as conduits of connection. They bring us back to a Source. For example: air, water, food, shelter, time and money all keep us connected to the Source of Life.
What we’re going to explore this month are some very specific resources…the conduits that connect us to this thing called Magic.
You might recall that I define Magic as anything and everything beyond the apparent. Given that, what can we ally with to help us relate to something that can feel as ineffable and impersonal as Magic?
What do we really need in order to connect to this Great Unseen?
That will be our guiding question this month. Once I started thinking about it this way, I realized that resources can be exciting after all!
There is mystery in meat-and-potatoes!
(okay, maybe adding a touch of mystery doesn’t work for everything.)
The answer to the guiding question this month will be different for each of us and will be highly dependent on circumstances. Sometimes we will need more resources, sometimes we will need less.
Sometimes our resources for relating with magic will look more traditional like wands or grimoires or spell jars; and sometimes our resources for relating with magic will look like knitting needles or pens or journals. Resources also include such things as knowledge, capacity, strategies, philosophies, networks, boundaries, health, music, as well as dreams and the liminal realm.
Our resources can come from harvesting fallen leaves or turning our face towards the Sun or letting the power of the earth bubble up from the bottoms of our bare feet all the way into our belly where it whispers to us where to go next.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention one of our greatest resources (a topic that has come up in many Substack-based conversations lately): our attention. We often overlook this as a resource, but it is, in fact, one of the most easily accessible conduits of connection to Magic that we have. When we pay attention to Magic, we are instantly connected to it. Just as importantly, our attention is a form of energetic currency that we can use to give back, to maintain reciprocity in our relationships with our allies in Magic.
This month will be all about establishing and deepening these sacred relationships (and then we’ll revisit the topic, going even deeper in February when we focus on the maintenance of magic…stay tuned!)
