This is fascinating to me. I stumbled upon this article today as I was googling my dream to try and make sense of it. I can vaguley remember it but it waas me and a group of people I knew in my dream but not anyone in my real life. Hikinh through a snowy forest. Up ahead was a cabin/tourist outlook type of structure. Large. It was night. But in that building was a large portal. We as a group entered the building and stared at the portal, no lights on in the building. And a bear circling the outside of the building. Group was scared. I was alert of my surroundings but not necessarily scared. Prepared for any outcome but not specifically terrified like the rest. I was more so intrigued by the portal. Never walked too close to it. Just staring at it as the group was focused on the bear outside. A loud bang came from the opposite side of the building and I was awake. I know there was more beforehand but can't put my finger on exactly what happened. Never dreamt anything like it before.
Hi Ash! Thank you so much for sharing this dream with me! What an amazing dream. I'm so intrigued by the portal. Do you know the work of Robert Moss? He has a technique (basically like meditative journeying) where we go back into a dream to get more information. It's something I do with most of my dreams now. The way I do it is to recall an image from the dream then, in a meditative state, go back to it and start asking questions. If that resonates with you, you might ask the bear or even the portal itself what they want you to know. Thank you again for sharing with me! I'm really fascinated by your dream and I love that you revived this old post of mine. It's one of my faves! 🤗
My name is jamie i dream about a bear in october and i couldnt move i was sitting in my leaving room in the chair backwards look at my kinchen door way i seen a small bear grow into a bigscary bear that walk to me touching my back and while itwas doing that i was trying Figure out how run from it but still i couldnt move, it felt so real the Bear breath, and Smell of a bear , and i also felt cold wind blow a round me.
Wow, that's an incredible dream, Jamie! Thank you so much for sharing that! When I had a similar dream where the bear was on my back, it was exactly like you said...I could really feel and smell the bear. It was so real! And your bear came through a doorway too. That really does sound like a guardian of the sacred place. Please do let me know if you have another bear dream!
Interesting, Jenna! I'm curious (and I apologize if you've answered this already), have you any experience with bears in your conscious life? I'm asking b/c in all of my 50+ years I've never dreamt of a bear. I'm wondering if it's because I've grown up around them and I've seen many in the wild. Of course, our bears are the smaller black bears of the northeast (certainly not the brown bears shown in your essay!).
My dreams are often problem-solving in nature. I wake up having solved a problem or resolved an issue that has been bothering me and so, I really do love learning we are visited by spirits giving us guidance. As always, lovely post! ♡
Thank you so much, Jessica! I love that you can rely on your dreams for problem solving. That's so profound, isn't it? I have seen bears in the wild only four times. They may have all been brown bears, though I'm not sure about one of them. Two of the times, the bears were crossing the trail in front of me where I was hiking and the other two times I was in a car and the bears were crossing the road. In every case, the bears just went about their business and seemed to have no interest in me.
Fascinating stuff Jenna, thank you! I also feel our dreams are the stuff of Spirit giving us guidance we cannot access with our thinking mind. Interesting that I don't recall any dreams of animals, mine tend to be people, place and situation related. I have always felt that our dream language is unique to us and can only be interpreted by us, that being said it makes sense that the bear would be the guardian of the portal. I am going to pay closer attention if something like this comes up for me. I appreciate your insight.
Jenna I love this! This past year I became part of a dream circle. Not psychology or symbol interpretation focused, but where one shares their dream and we all dream it together. It is sooo profound. It has opened my eyes to a world I took for granted. I love your dream about the bear and merging with it as the initiation. Quite powerful!
About two months ago I dreamt of bears. At first the bears were something I was scared of. A need to protect myself and others from them. However the last contact was with a mama bear, her two teenagers and newborn cubs. More observing, yet very peaceful. Like finding my pack!
I never actually dream about bears Jenna, it tends to be lions and tigers. Bears do feature in my world though as they are a symbol of healing in Native American wisdom. I don’t usually ask for help in resolving things in my dreams, I just know that there is funky stuff that happens there. Last night I asked for resolution of something and I’m sure it was presented to me, so I’ll be doing that again. Thank you! 💫🙏❤️
Thank you, Louise! It's so interesting that you mention lions and tigers. My dreams lately have been all about lions! My thinking right now is that these are also portal guardians, but I'm going to have to ask my guides what the significance is between a lion and a bear (why one and not the other).
BEAUTIFUL!!! I have not been dreaming about bears lately, but Bear was a huge part of my birthing experience, with my second boy. Bear as a steward, or guardian, to a temple or sacred space: a higher consciousness, and as a symbol, or actual dream realm/spirit realm mechanism of the transformation of fear is so potent! Once the fear is faced, the transformation achieved, the Way was opened for such a pivotal dream/spirit experience, in a similar way as to how Bear helped me birth a second time, after an incredibly scary and traumatic first birth experience.
Bear.
Thank you for bringing Her in. And for your excellent insights! So Good!
Thank YOU for sharing this, Romy! 💖💖💖 And how perfect it is that Bear helped you birth. I often see Bear as the image for the mother archetype--and now bear as midwife too, helping us shift our perspective of what we didn't think we could bear. Also, in birth specifically, we bear down. Now I'm seeing the word bear everywhere! Love you!
I have never dreamed of bears, honestly I don't really think of bears much at all. We don't actually have any native mammals in New Zealand, save for a teeny little bat.
Wow! I never knew that! I learn so much from you, Bron. I really had no idea there was any place without native mammals. That's very interesting indeed. I've encountered bears in waking life three times and each time I was fortunate that they were heading in the opposite direction from me.
Hi Jenna, I love this! And this part in particular: "My guides explained to me that dreams are the realm of spirit in all its forms. Every dream we have is spirit communicating with us. Some dreams come from the Divine, some from ancestors, some from guardian spirits and guides, and some from the spirits of the land. Dreams are a primary way that spirit speaks to us, and each of our dream languages are unique."
I've also heard it said that it's important to make yourself every part of the dream. For example if you dream about a bear, imagine that you are the bear - which sounds a bit like what happened in your dream as you merged with the bear.
I used to have many dreams about bears and asked a very wise older Englishwoman friend what she thought. She helped me to see that my dreams about bears were about me not owning my own strength. Since I learned to embody my strength, I stopped dreaming about bears - even though I actually love bears - but I guess I don't need to dream about them anymore🐻🥰
That's wonderful, Camilla, thank you for sharing this! I can totally see that. Once you embodied your strength, the bears didn't need to give you that message anymore. Do you remember if you felt frightened of them in the dreams?
My husband does this! You're the 2nd person I've heard of doing this. Maybe I will be my 3rd person to know who does it: "Once I began to understand this dream language of spirit, a whole new world opened up to me. I made a practice of asking for guidance on a particular issue before going to bed and, without fail, the answer would come that night in a dream. (Seriously, give this a try, it’s amazing!)"
Yay! I hope you are the third person you know to do this, Stephanie! And if you do, please let me know how it goes. Do you know if your husband ever dreams about bears in particular? I'm so curious about this.
Very interesting. I don’t remember having bear dreams but I would imagine that they could represent a boss, your mother, or something or someone that is literally overbearing (no pun intended). The Lenormand meaning is what I think of the bear.
Thank you, Miriam! I know pretty much nothing about Lenormand so I looked it up after reading your comment and I'm deeply intrigued. Do you prefer Lenormand to tarot?
Actually I like tarot much better because it makes you reflect whereas Lenormand does not and it’s more concrete. When it comes to tarot there are no “good” or “bad” cards (I had a convo earlier this week about the positive aspects of Three of Swords which is that it validates your feelings from difficult situations) but with Lenormand there are positive, negative, and neutral cards.

#1 on the threat-down?
I wish I could put a gif here.

I love that your dream was like finding a pack! A belonging. That's so profound. Have others in your circle mentioned bear dreams?
Ahhhhhhhh! Amazing - yes! "What we didn't think we could bear" !!!! AND bear down - potent!
I need Bear right now, and ha! Here She is, Mama Bear...!!! 💖

Ooooh, yes! Dreams are great for stories! I just looked up your Devil's Taunt. It looks intriguing! Did that come from a dream?
