It’s hard to believe we’re already about to begin month 3 of our year-long exploration of Magic. I had so much fun in the first two months! (In month one, we looked at Magic and Identity and month two was all about Resources of Magic.) As I mentioned above, for month 3 we’ll be exploring our mindsets around magic. We’ll be shining a light on our own judgments, motivations and intentions about magic in order to deepen our relationships with it.
What is mindset?
Mindset refers to the way in which we think in any given situation. It encompasses a set of beliefs and attitudes that steer our actions and reactions to the world around us. Psychologists often use binary pairs to help us understand our mindset, such as scarcity versus abundance, fixed versus growth, and positive versus negative.
Although I tend to think of mindset as being more fluid than these binary paradigms, it's still helpful to use them to identify where our mindset is at any given moment. A unique aspect of mindsets is that they can be changed through attention and practice. By taking note of our thoughts, we can recognize the ones that are not serving us and replace them with more constructive ones. By intentionally adopting new thought patterns and then practicing them, the new mindset becomes second nature.
Why does it matter to understand our mindset about magic?
As I always say, awareness feeds the power of choice. By comprehending our thought processes around magic specifically, we can make choices to enrich our relationship and practices with it. In other words, gaining clarity on our mindset around magic can help make our practices more effective. Furthermore, our thinking influences our behavior, which in turn impacts the way we relate to magic.
The framework for this month will be:
Week one—an exploration of different definitions and systems of mindset to expand our understanding.
Week two—mindset includes our judgments too. We’ll spend this second week taking a deep look at the ways we judge our own ideas of magic and how this might block our practices.
Week three—we’ll jump into our own motivations and intentions for cultivating a relationship with magic.
Week four—we’ll set a framework/foundation for developing a ritual mindset.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below or send me an email. I’m excited to explore mindset and magic with you!
I learned a lot about mindset from my friend and fellow Substacker,
who writes The Bright Life. Donna is a down-to-earth guide through the journey of wellbeing. Check her out, you’re gonna love her!
I do love what you wrote- "our mindset is fluid".. And then you wrote "awareness feeds the power of choice." .That makes me think...what am I thinking? what am I feeding my thoughts, my mind, my consciousness. I saw a picture of my thoughts in the fluidity of water and I note how they react to the water...do they drown because they are too heavy, too stale, too fake? Do they float because they are too light, too airy, too day dreamy? Or do they merge with the water and feed it, cultivate it, nurture it....
Oh how liberating that is... Oh how wonderful that is...Oh how empowering that is. You wrote it in terms of magic, yet it so relates to life in general too. And when said together it feels like a sacred spell to the heart and mind, to the dreams still to create and those that are being created, to the mind and body and to the all of everything.
Thank you Jenna. Thank you.
Jenna, thank you so much for referencing my work! It means a lot to me.❤
I am SO excited about this month. Mindset and how it relates to magic is an utterly fascinating idea and I commend you on it. I look forward to diving in because I recognize I was much more attuned to ritual and formal magic in the first half of my adulthood, after which things seemed to shift.
I think that's for two reasons: firstly I entered the scientific community as a result of my chosen career path and was very focused on research and measurable outcomes so drifted away from the unknown. I never stopped recognizing its worth and existence, rather it wasn't a part of my everyday. Bigger than that was a slow, nuanced increase in emotional maturity (I hope🤣) and a deepened spirituality so that it became who I am at all times without as much need of ritual to seek it out.
My soul longs for more though which is why I am gravitating so strongly to your work. I appreciate your thoughtful, not flaky, approach to magic and I look forward to exploring it with you.
