Dearest readers,
May the Universe bring you the unwavering strength of knowing who you are, the clarity to stand in your truth, and the courage to claim your path. May the Sovereign walk beside you—not as a distant ruler, but as the steady force within, reminding you that you are the keeper of your own realm. And most of all, may you trust in the power that moves through you, knowing that true sovereignty is not about dominion, but about knowing and tending the sacred territory of your own being. 💖💖💖
Introducing The Sovereign
I’m thrilled to continue our archetypal explorations together! 🤗 For March, we turn to the Sovereign. Just as before, I’ll draw a tarot card each week to illuminate another facet of this archetype—its gifts, its wounds, and the many ways it calls us to step into deeper alignment with our own authority. By the end of the month, we will likely each have a more embodied understanding of what it means to claim sovereignty—not as control over others, but as devotion to the realm that is ours to tend.
Like the Guardian and the Genius, the Sovereign belongs to the lineage of eight ancient functions revealed to me by my ancestor guide. In that vision, each function played a crucial role in the collective, ensuring that no essential aspect of human experience was left untended. The Sovereign was entrusted not just with power, but with the responsibility of knowing their realm—the space they are meant to inhabit fully, the life that is theirs to shape. This is the aspect of us that asks: What is mine to rule?
The Sovereign is all about leadership. This one rules—again, not through domination—but through the clarity of their vision and the strength of their presence. They shape the realm by how they tend it, by the choices they make, and by the way they inspire others to step into their own power. It is the inner authority that says, I will not wait for permission to be who I am. A true Sovereign does not merely hold power—they understand their domain. They know what belongs within it and what does not. It is the capacity to stand in one's own autonomy, free from external dictates that compromise the soul’s integrity.
The Light and Shadow of The Sovereign
In its light aspect, the Sovereign grants us the power to choose our own path with clarity and intention. It helps us discern where we are acting from true authority versus where we are yielding out of fear or obligation. It reminds us that autonomy does not mean isolation—it means standing fully in our own being so that we can enter relationships from a place of integrity rather than submission.
A Sovereign who knows their realm understands how to tend it—how to create the conditions in which life flourishes, how to set boundaries that protect rather than imprison, and how to lead with wisdom rather than force. And only the Sovereign can define its realm, whether its an internal or external landscape. The Sovereign in the light embodies the qualities they wish to see reflected in their realm. Their power is in their presence, in the steadiness of their knowing, and in their ability to uplift rather than diminish all that is within the realm.
Yet every throne has its shadow. The Sovereign’s wounds often carry the echoes of enslavement, invisibility, and forced compromise. When sovereignty is taken from us, we lose our sense of self. When we willingly abdicate our sovereignty, we become ghosts in our own lives. The wounds of the Sovereign can show up in neglecting the realm entirely (escaping responsibility, avoiding choice, abdicating one’s power) or clutching it too tightly (rigidity, control, unwillingness to surrender or trust). Some Sovereigns flee from their own domain, afraid of what true autonomy asks of them. Others grip it so fiercely that they become tyrants, ruling with fear instead of wisdom.
When sovereignty is wounded, the realm suffers—whether that realm is our own body, our inner world, our relationships, or our creative work. A Sovereign who forgets their role may feel powerless, invisible, or trapped in cycles of compromise that drain their energy. On the other hand, a Sovereign who is too consumed by control may find themselves isolated, exhausted, or disconnected from what truly matters.
Ultimately, The Sovereign calls us to ask:
Where do I claim my own realm, and where do I abandon it?
What is mine to tend, and how am I tending it?
Am I using my power wisely, leading with integrity, or shrinking away from the responsibility it asks of me?
Where has my sovereignty been compromised, and how can I reclaim it?
A Ritual to Attune to The Sovereign
In this ritual, we honor sovereignty as the conscious tending of our realm—whatever that realm may be. Imagine the Sovereign as a presence within you, seated at the center of your being, fully aware of the space they hold. This is not a ruler who dictates, but an inner voice that knows exactly where you are meant to stand.
Take a moment to feel into your own realm. Where do you hold authority? Where do you feel powerful? Where do you feel uncertain? Are there places in your life where you compromise too much, where you shrink, where you hold back your own autonomy? Or perhaps there are places where you resist collaboration, where sovereignty has hardened into a wall rather than an open door.
As you attune to the Sovereign, notice what arises. Perhaps a sense of rootedness, or maybe a flicker of discomfort. Whatever it is, honor it—this is the beginning of knowing your realm.
Before we begin, let’s release the idea that sovereignty means standing alone. Instead, let’s welcome it as a path of integration—one where autonomy and connection are not opposites, but partners in our unfolding. By stepping into conscious relationship with the Sovereign, we reclaim the right to walk our own path, in our own way, on our own terms.
I can't wait to explore the Sovereign with you and hear your insights throughout the month. Sovereignty is a deeply personal journey, but we don’t have to walk it alone. Let’s step into our realms of power together—discussing, reflecting, and learning from one another along the way. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear how the Sovereign is showing up for you!
This is so amazing Jenna. I have been stepping more into my own inner sovereign of late and I feel her asking things of me that I once shyed away from. I am opening the doors within in a different way now and asking the Gatekeepers that once held my space so tightly to still be there as protectors, yet to allow the light to come in more.
This is such a nourishing and empowering post. It is one that is needed so much at this time in our lives. May the Sovereign within us stand tall so that we can be the positive healing loving change in the world.
ps/ I sent you a DM
This was such an exciting post, Jenna (!!!). Your description of the shadow of the Sovereign was so clear and my essential self recognized it immediately as familiar, even though it was new to me. My process of recovering from wounds related to invisibility, forced compromise and...yes, enslavement of a sort has become more conscious in the past few years, but I think the process began unconsciously (maybe semi-consciously) decades ago. Anyway, I'd never heard these things expressed as the shadow side of sovereignty, and I really felt it land. Your explanations strike me as so consistently clear and truthy. Thank you so much for all of this, not least of all the downloadable ritual instructions. Looking forward to sitting with that tomorrow when I have more time. 🦁💛🧡❤️🔥
